Cape Associates has recently announced that they are building the This Old House 2020 Idea House. Designed by Union Studio Architecture & Community Design with interior design by Denise Enright Interior Design, the home in Eastham will feature a comfortable floor plan, front porch, upstairs master with en suite bath, reading loft, an in-law apartment (fashioned as an ‘Accessory Dwelling Unit’ or ADU) and more.
Coined “The Cottage on the Cape” the 2,400-square-foot home will be packed with fresh ideas, innovative products and a layout that provides great flexibility for how the house is used. Says Claudia Jepsen, This Old House VP Marketing, “We’re honored to be partnering with Union Studio and Cape Associates to show our fans how smart design, clever use of space, and innovative products can pack a whole lot of living in an accessible footprint.”
“Seeing this project come to life here on the Cape will be a lot of fun,” says Matt Cole, President & CEO of Cape Associates. “So many of us have grown up in this business following This Old House. There is an interesting story behind the design for the Idea House and the opportunity to build this with the team at This Old House is a tremendous honor. We hope the project helps bring awareness to the fact that there’s a need for flexible housing here, and that smart design is within reach,” he continues.
A 24/7 webcam is positioned on site and can be viewed on the This Old House web site to follow along with daily progress.
The original design was the winning submission for Cape Cod Young Professional’s House Design Contest, held in 2017. Organized in partnership with Cape Cod & Islands Association of REALTORS, the contest aimed to create awareness around the need for housing options for young professionals on Cape Cod. Union Studio’s “Side Hustle House” design won in the 2-bedroom category and sought to address the concern for affordable family-friendly housing while supporting methods of generating income on the side. The home features an option for a locked off in-law apartment (ADU) that can double as expanded living space and a garage that can be used as a creative space.
Cape Associates purchased rights to the design with the intent to build in Eastham, an area with limited inventory of new construction homes and very few ADU’s .
