Recently Completed Provincetown Kitchen Renovation
— England and New England come together in this kitchen renovation. Living between the US and the UK with frequent travel throughout Europe, owners Chris Amplo and John O’Doherty designed their home to combine the comforts of cape cod style and the charm of an old world farmhouse. Once Cape Associates was chosen as a building partner, the first major decision was to change the orientation of the kitchen from a long galley to a front-facing open concept which transformed the kitchen from merely functional into the social center of this historic home. The remaining details follow suit to create a space that is as elegant as it is comfortable.
The large peninsula serves three purposes; a casual spot for a snack or coffee talk with a neighbor, a division of space to allow the cooks to work and serve on the spacious white Silestone countertop and still visit with guests, and as a major storage area for all the appliances and dishes a chef could desire.
The range by Lecanche is made to order in France and complements the chandelier over the dining table inspired by the bistros on the streets of Paris. The dark trim, antique subway tiles and brass hardware give a classic feel respecting the 1800’s, when the house was built. The white farmhouse sink by Shaws England, white quartz countertop and range bring enough light to the space reminding you that you are, indeed, in a beach house that’s intended for relaxation and levity. The French doors look out to wisteria, seagrass and outdoor dining.
Major challenges included keeping the renovation moving while accommodating yet-to-arrive foreign appliances from around the world and, as is usually the case with historic captains’ houses on Cape Cod, adjusting uneven floors and walls to converge with new building materials.
Highlights include: random width nickel gap on the walls, an “appliance garage” on the counter’s edge; custom wine rack in the upper cabinets; crown molding around the cabinets with matching paneled refrigerator and wood shroud over the range; and the fir floors with grey stain and a satin polyurethane finish.
